John Ritchie
Ritchie was first signed for City in 1962 by Tony Waddington who had never even seen him play.
Although, Waddington did then - in his own words - make a huge mistake by selling Ritchie to Sheffield Wednesday in 1966, and so brought him back in 1969. Due to his record over his two spells at the club averaging to a goal every two games, it's safe to say his risk paid off, firstly in signing him, and secondly in returning him to the club.
Ritchie scored 16 goals in his first season back with City and helped them to reach the FA Cup Finals in both 1971 and 1972 before winning the League Cup against Chelsea, also in 1972. However, he is accredited with one of the fastest dismissals in football history. In 1972 he was sent off for punching an opponent a UEFA Cup game after 29 seconds without even touching the ball!
Tragically a double fracture of the leg ended his career in 1976 whilst playing for Stafford Rangers, and sadly he passed away in early 2007, aged 66.
Appearances for the Potters: 332 + 11 substitute appearance. 171 goals.
