Commonly regarded as one of City's greatest ever defenders, Smith accrued nearly 500 appearances and 17 years' service for the club.

He was praised for being a totally committed defender, never fearing a tackle.

Smith was part of the 1972 Cup-winning team, but unfortunately was never capped for England.

During his last season at The Victoria Ground, Smith was also part of the coaching staff, giving him the basis he needed to begin his managerial career which provided him with some success.  He went on to manage several teams including Bristol City, Oxford United and West Bromwich Albion.  Wrexham also won the LDV Vans Trophy in 2005 under his guidance.
