Often referred to as being the best 'keeper ever, Banks was certainly the best 'keeper in the world between 1968 and 71.

He's also accredited by some with the 'best save ever' for his stop of Pele's downward header in the World Cup Finals in 1970. When he made this save, Banks was a City player, and had been for 3 years. He is still City's most capped player, with 36 appearances at international level whilst with the club. He was also goalkeeper during the 1972 League Cup Win.

Banks's honours are numerous: he was named the Football Writers' 'Footballer of the Year' and 'Sportsman of the Year' in 1972, as well as being voted NASL 'Goalkeeper of the Year' when playing for Fort Lauderdale Strikers.

Banks returned to The Victoria Ground as coach in May 1978 for a short time before assisting at Vale Park, and then becoming General Manager of Telford United.

Gordon was named in the Football League 100 Legends list in 1998 and was an inaugural inductee of the English Football Hall of Fame in 2002.

Following on from the death of Sir Stanley Matthews, Gordon was made President of Stoke City Football Club.
