Late drama ensured City picked up maximum points from an exciting encounter in Scunthorpe.

Liam Lawrence's 93rd minute header turned the game upside down, after Jim Goodwin looked to have won the game for the hosts with a wonder strike, five minutes from time.

A Paul Hayes own goal levelled matters for the Potters in the 88th minute, after he cancelled out Richard Cresswell's strike in the first half.

Tony Pulis shuffled the defence about ahead of the match, bringing back Gabriel Zakuani and Carl Dickinson at the expense of Stephen Wright and Andy Wilkinson.

City started the match brightly and caught the hosts out on a counter attack. Eustace's long ball found Ricardo Fuller who beat the defender but fired over the bar.

The Iron had City pitched in their own 18-yard box shortly after, but good defending from Leon Cort and Championship player of the month Ryan Shawcross ensured the Potters remained on level terms.

A poor back pass from Cliff Byrne set free Fuller, but just as he was ready to fire goalwards he was cynically hacked down.

Eustace smashed the resulting free-kick straight at the wall, but Dickinson picked up the loose ball and found Shawcross with an in-swinging cross, which the Manchester United youngster headed just over.

Hayes should have put the hosts in front in the 23rd minute after a long ball found the striker unmarked, however he took to much time on the ball and his shot was blocked by an outstretched Cort.

A City corner should have seen Cresswell make it 1-0 for the Potters after a goalmouth scramble but his strike was blocked on the line before Cort almost diverted the ball home.

However, just seconds later the former Preston man made amends by diverting Eustace's powerful shot beyond Joe Murphy to give City the lead.

Pulis' side failed to hold on to the lead though, and Hayes equalised on the half hour.

Kevin Hurst fired in a dangerous cross which Shawcross unfortunately flicked to the former Barnsley star, who made no mistake for 6-yards.

Paterson used his pace to beat a defender and fire an audacious 30-yard strike at goal, which cannoned off the crossbar, before Shawcross sliced his clearance on to the bar for a second time.

A quick burst from Fuller saw him release Cresswell on the left flank before he fired in dangerously across the box, which keeper Murphy parried away from the approaching Danny Pugh.

Nigel Adkins side came out for the second half in bullish mood, and were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty in the 47th minute after Shawcross looked to have handled inside the penalty area.

A combination of Simonsen and Liam Lawrence thwarted Hayes in the 54th minute, after the powerful striker powered his header at goal following a Hurst corner.

Somewhat against the run of play, City Fuller should have put the Potters ahead four minutes later.

The direct Jamaican powered past three defenders before smashing his shot over the bar, with just the keeper to beat.

The Iron were pushing City back, and when Hurst beat Zakuani and cut inside he almost fired the hosts in front.

Lawrence almost made it 2-1 for the Potters in the 77th minute, but after Pugh had brilliantly picked out the winger, he somehow side footed the ball just wide of the right hand post.

City looked refreshed and Fuller was next to try his luck, but he fired straight at Murphy with Lawrence open in the 6-yard box.

Just as the game looked to be heading for a draw, Goodwin brilliantly fired the Iron into the lead.

The 'Silver Fox' exquisitely smashed the ball into the roof of the net from 15-yards after City failed to clear their lines.

The Potters should have been deflated, but to their credit they responded immediately and a brilliant free-kick routine led to an equaliser, with Hayes turning the ball past his own keeper after Lawrence's flashing ball across goal.

The late drama got even more dramatic deep into injury time when Lawrence nodded home Pugh's brilliant centre to shock Glanford Park.
