Stoke's run of five straight victories came to an abrupt end as they slumped to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Preston North End at Deepdale.

Richard Chaplow's brace sunk the Potters, heading Preston in front after 22 minutes before firing low from distance after being teed up from a free-kick.

Misfiring Stoke had a few good chances to get something out of the game but Fuller, Shawcross and co didn't have their shooting boots on.

Tony Pulis only made one change to the side that beat Ipswich last Saturday, with Danny Pugh recalled at left-back after suspension at the expense of Carl Dickinson.

The Potters' bench was short of a goal-keeper after Marton Fulop was recalled to Sunderland, while Dickinson dropped to the bench alongside Parkin, Gallagher, Diao and Wilkinson.

Although Stoke looked the more dangerous of the two sides in the opening minutes, it was Preston who earned the first corner of the game, but Paul McKenna's cross was well defended by the Potters.

Some good approach play by Stoke nearly led to an opening thanks to some hesitation in the Preston defence, but eventually the ball was scrambled away before either Richard Cresswell or Liam Lawrence could get a shot away.

Despite Stoke's promising start they went a goal behind in the 22nd minute when a deep Preston free-kick found the head of Richard Chaplow, who headed into the opposite corner to give Preston the lead.

Stoke had two chances in quick succession to equalise straight away. Lawrence's free-kick found its way to the far post where it was scrambled away for a corner after Fuller hit the post from an acute angle.

The resulting corner landed at the feet of Ryan Shawcross but the ball was hacked away before he could pull the trigger.

However the danger was still not over. Leon Cort's vicious long range effort was tipped away by Andy Lonergan. Shawcross was against the first to connect with Lawrence's corner, but his first time shot hit the outside of the post.

Whaley headed wide soon after for Preston, before the Potters conceded a second against the run of play.

Stoke conceded a free kick at the edge of their own box. The ball was knocked across to Chaplow who's low, long-range strike found the bottom left-hand corner to make it 2-0 to Preston in the 33rd minute.

Shawcross had a great chance to pull one back for Stoke just before half-time, but his header from Lawrence's cross went agonisingly wide.

A minute later Stoke had a strong penalty claim when Fuller appeared to be pulled down in the box, but the referee waved play on in front of the home end.

City almost got back into the game straight after the restart, but despite a number of openings, no-one in the Potters attack was able to get the vital touch.

Preston had a chance minutes later but Whaleys low cross flashed across goal.

Mamady Sidibe also fired over as the Potters sought to get themselves back on level terms.

Chaplow missed a sitter when his header from six yards flew embarrassingly wide.

Cort was stretched off after 68 minutes and was replaced by Andy Wilkinson. Sidibe also made way for Parkin.

Lawrence was booked with fifteen minutes remaining for a late tackle as tempers began to flare.

Glenn Whelan was booked moments later when he was judged to have jumped unfairly with Youl Mawene. He will now miss the games against Burnley and Norwich.

Paul Gallagher replaced Whelan with ten minutes remaining as Stoke through caution to the wind.

Preston captain McKenna could have sealed the win but he fired wide from the edge of the box.

Fuller was fouled on the edge of the Preston box, but Lawrence fired over from the free kick.

Stoke went close again at the death when Fuller was sent through on goal by Lawrence but his shot was parried wide by Lonergan. Wilkinson was first to Lawrence's corner but his header was straight at the 'keeper.

Preston survived Stoke's late onslaught to end the Potters unbeaten run.
