It was a case of unlucky thirteen for the Potters, as they slipped to a 4-1 defeat in the FA Cup Third Round replay at St James' Park.

The Potters were twelve games unbeaten ahead of the game, and despite battling bravely, Newcastle turned on the style following the appointment of Kevin Keegan as manager.

Goals from Michael Owen, Cacapa, James Miller and Damien Duff secured a spot in the fourth round for the Magpies, who were reduced to ten men in the first half after Turkish midfielder Emre lunged in at John Eustace.

Liam Lawrence pulled one back late on, after curling home beautifully past Shay Given from outside the area.

Tony Pulis made two changes ahead of the match, bringing in Jon Parkin and Gabriel Zakuani, with Andy Wilkinson and Carl Dickinson missing out.

There was an electric atmosphere within the stadium following the news of Keegan's return, and that no doubt played a part in Nigel Pearson's sides upturn in fortunes.

City looked to silence the crowd early on and could have been ahead after only 80 seconds. Lawrence fired goalwards from 20-yards which Shay Given did well to parry, but only as far as Ryan Shawcross who fired just wide.

Three minutes later Rory Delap played an exquisite through ball to Ricardo Fuller, but after beating Cacapa, his shot was blocked by the legs of Given and cleared away from danger.

England hit-man Owen went close with a 20-yarder on six minutes, but made amends shortly after.

Ireland international Duff's deep cross from the left wasn't cleared by the City backline, and Owen pounced to tap the ball in to the bottom left hand corner from 3-yards.

Steve Simonsen saved well at his near post after Emre waltzed his way through the defence.

City were handed a lifeline on the half hour when the Turkish international was sent off by referee Uriah Rennie after lunging in on John Eustace.

However, despite City's one man advantage that didn't stop the hosts from doubling their lead.

Brazilian defender Cacapa rose highest and flicked Charles N'Zogbia's in-swinging corner beyond Simonsen and in to the back of the net.

Neat play down the left flank resulted in Delap attempting a long range strike, which flew over the bar.

Following the half time interval City almost halved the deficit. Parkin latched on to Zakuani's header and expertly flicked the ball past Given, but it agonisingly drifted just wide.

A clever one two between Lawrence and Eustace almost led to Delap getting on to the scoresheet, but his header hit the side netting.

The Premier League side showed their class in the 68th minute, after a quick break away saw Milner drill the ball in to the bottom corner from 20-yards to make it three.

Shortly after it was four. Milner dispossessed substitute Diao and played in N'Zogbia who played a clever ball across to Duff, and he calmly side footed the ball to the left of Simonsen to seal the win.

Lawrence gave the vocal 3,000 travelling City supporters something to shout about late on as he fired the ball home spectacularly from 25-yards in the 89th minute.
