City have this evening beaten the closure of the transfer window to secure the signing of Sheffield Wednesday star Glenn Whelan.

The 24-year-old creative midfielder has penned a three and a half year deal at the Britannia Stadium, after the two clubs agreed a fee of £500,000.

Glenn becomes manager Tony Pulis' sixth signing of the transfer window, following the arrivals of Ryan Shawcross (2,000,000), Leon Cort (1,200,000), Danny Pugh (£500,000), Andy Griffin (£350,000) and Paul Gallagher (Loan).

The Potters beat off a number of other clubs for his signature, and he goes straight in to the squad with Paul for Saturday's 12:30pm clash against Cardiff City.

Confirming the deal, Chief Executive Tony Scholes said: "We are delighted with the business that we have achieved today, especially in being able to sign Glenn and Paul Gallagher.

"It has been a long day and everyone has been working tirelessly to complete the deals.

"At the end of the day we have achieved everything that we set out to do.

"We now hope that today's business will help towards our goal of bringing to the club the success that we all crave."

Director of Football John Rudge also expresses his delight stating: "Glenn is a player that we have been chasing for some time and we are delighted that we have finally secured his signature."
