Steve played a pivotal part in helping the Potters in to the Premier League last season, making 38 appearances in all competitions.
A former England Youth and under-21 international, he began his career at Tranmere before moving across the Mersey to join Premiership side Everton in 1998 for a fee £3.3 million - a British record for a goalkeeper.
However, a change of managers at Goodison Park hindered his progress and a free transfer to the Potters followed in 2004.
Steve quickly established himself at the Britannia Stadium and has been City's first choice goalkeeper since signing for the club four years ago.
He broke a club record of six consecutive clean sheets in 2006 and signed a contract extension in the summer of 2007 to keep him at the club until 2010.
