City's second string continued their good form in the Pontins League as they claimed a 2-1 victory over Sheffield United at the Britannia Stadium.

City started an entertaining first-half very well and Marc Goodfellow saw a shot well saved by Blades 'keeper Tom Lindley before firing the ball just wide of the target a minute later.

Karl Henry then saw his shot saved, again after good work by Goodfellow, and shortly after Kris Commons blazed over the bar after a good run.

On the half-hour City finally got a reward for their efforts, triallist Rob Ullathorne released Goodfellow down the left and he crossed to meet Lewis Neal's well-timed run and the midfielder cracked home from six yards.

However, City's lead was short-lived, as the Blades equalised against the run of play just before the break.

A good move on the United left saw a dazzling run from winger Kevan Hurst and he finished emphatically to goalkeeper David Clarke's right.

City looked for a breakthrough immediately at the start of the second half and a Goodfellow header came back off the upright.

Commons then saw his 30-yard free-kick well held by the goalkeeper. The visitors then took charge of the game and Anthony Tansley saw two efforts strike the bar in the space of ten minutes.

Just as the game looked to be heading for a stalemate, City found an extra gear and scored a decisive winner two minutes from time. Brian Wilson's low cross found the feet of Goodfellow and the striker nipped away from his marker before poking the ball past the goalkeeper, leaving Chris Iwelumo to tap home on the line.

City: Clarke, Wilson, Ullathorne, Wilkinson, Owen, Henry, Parsons (Denny 76), Neal, Iwelumo, Goodfellow, Commons. Subs (not used): L. Hall, Palmer, Cartwright, Keogh.
