Rotherham 3 Stoke City 2
Goals from Chris Greenacre and Laurence Hall were not enough to prevent the reserves going down to a 3-2 Pontins League defeat against Rotherham at the Don Valley Stadium.
City never recovered from conceding two goals in the first-half, despite a strong second-half comeback.
Rotherham took the lead midway through the opening period through Richie Barker and John Mullins added a second within five minutes.
Greenacre and Goodfellow went close with efforts, but a poor first-half was compounded when Peter Hoekstra limped off with an ankle injury.
Greenacre's goal, from Hall's cross, just after the interval was a boost and Hall hit the post with a shot before the home side added a third.
Hall pulled a goal back ten minutes from time when he fired home from 18 yards and Goodfellow almost snatched a point in injury time but shot wide.
Hall's appearance was his first since returning from his loan spell with Dr Martens outfit Tiverton Town, as was the second-half substitute appearance of Gareth Owen.
City: Duggan, Wilson, Ullathorne, Wilkinson, Williams (Owen 45), Hoekstra (Hall 30), Henry, Neal, Goodfellow, Iwelumo, Greenacre. Subs (not used): Senna, Hutchinson, Denny.
