Lewis Buxton made a goalscoring return to action as City's second-string comfortably beat Leeds United 2-1 at the Britannia Stadium.

The 22-year-old defender, playing in his first game since pre-season, opened the scoring for the Potters before being substituted at half time.

Adam Rooney sealed the win for City when his delicate lob found the back of the net after 16 minutes.

Danny Rose grabbed a consolation for Leeds midway through the half but a win for the home side was rarely in doubt.

Buxton's return was just one of two changes to the side that dumped Hednesford Town out of the Staffs Senior Cup as Noel Blake again named a strong side.

Leeds, by contrast, fielded an inexperience eleven, and were on the back foot from the kick off.

Peter Sweeney's free kick saw visiting 'keeper Jonathon Lund scrambling across his line after Sammy Bangoura had been fouled on the edge of the box.

But City didn't have to wait long before they took the lead, with Buxton meeting Sweeney's cross as the near post and heading home.

Buoyed by the goal, City raced into a two-goal lead soon after as Anthony Pulis' perfectly weighted through ball allowed Rooney to lob the stranded Leeds 'keeper.

Paterson could have added to the scores after Bangoura had flicked Matthew Hazley's deep cross into his path, but he chose power over accuracy and blasted wide of the near post.

City were thankful to Robert Duggan midway through the half as his point blank save from David Brown preserved the Potters' clean sheet.

Paterson saw another effort tipped wide of the post by Lund while Sweeney effort from distance caused problems for the United rearguard going into the break.

City continued to press the young defence in the second half as Paterson cut in off the right flank to drill over.

But Rose put Leeds back into the game minutes after striking the post for the visitors.

Scott Gardiner's in swinging corner was only cleared to the edge of the area by Bangoura and Rose rifled home past the despairing dive of Robert Duggan.

City always looked the more likely to add to the score as they pressed to kill the game late on, but breathed a sigh of relief when Gardiner's goal five minutes from time was chalked off for offside.

Jonathon Howson should have equalised for Leeds in injury time, but inexplicably missed a free header at the back post, with Duggan stranded.
